What your vehicle's VIN can tell you
A VIN looks like a random string, but every character is meaningful. Read left to right it reveals where and how a vehicle was built.
The structure
- Characters 1-3 (WMI): the manufacturer and country of origin.
- Characters 4-9 (VDS): model, body style, engine and a check digit that validates the whole number.
- Characters 10-17 (VIS): model year, assembly plant and the unique serial number.

Beyond the decode
The decode confirms the build; a history report confirms the life — accidents, title brands, mileage and ownership. Use both together.
The check digit in position 9 is a maths test of the entire VIN. If it doesn't validate, the VIN is mistyped or fake.
